How to Save Your Euros When Backpacking - Enjoy!

No matter how much you scrimp and save for that big trip, there are always going to be unforeseen costs - like the big parties with all your new friends! With that in mind here are some quick and simple tips to save you money, wherever you end up in the world.

1. Book your accommodation in advance. The further ahead you plan the cheaper it is and when you book online, there are often discounts to be taken advantage of.

2. Dont buy the first tourism and transport pass that pops up on Google when youre researching your destination. The best value tours and transport can be found at your hostel from your fellow budget travellers, working behind reception.

3. If you overspend or fancy doing something beyond your current budget, ask if there are any jobs at the hostel. Even if its just an evening of bar tending, it might get you closer to that sky dive or your air fare home!

4. Keep an eye on the websites, newsletters, Facebook groups, podcasts and travel magazines at your hostel. These resources are usually free and are often full of useful budget tips.

5. Ask if your hostel has self catering facilities. Preparing your own food and just drinking tap water (where its OK to do this) can cut what you spend on food to €10 a day or less!

6. If your travels take you to London then invest in an Oyster Card. You load these with credit before swiping them over the turnstiles at underground train stations. Pre-paid Oyster Cards entitle you to half price travel and can be used on buses too.

7. If you end up in Amsterdam look out for a chain of supermarkets called Albert Heyn. You can pick up a sandwich, some fruit and a drink from these shops for a grand total of €2.

8. Check with your bank to see if they provide special travel accounts. NatWest definitely do and its worth opening one just so you dont have to pay withdrawal charges, ever again!

9. Dont wait to the last minute and get your money changed at the airport. Shop around for commission free currency. Post Offices in Britain and branches of HSBC everywhere are just some of the places that offer great rates.

10. Taxis are expensive so dont get into one unless you absolutely have to. Even then check in your trip guide to see what the official taxi license looks like and make sure the car youre getting into, has one. Unsolicited taxis charge extortionate rates and lock you in until you pay.
